Nominate her. That’s it. Just nominate Nikki Haley as your Republican Party candidate for president, and I’ll vote for her. You have my word.
Why would I vote for Nikki Haley over Joe Biden? Because I gave you my word that I would vote for her, and I gave my word because I love living in a democracy more than I love my political party. A lot more.
If Nikki Haley were president, a conservative would be running our country—but our democracy would not be in jeopardy. Nikki Haley does not want to be an autocrat. (An autocrat is a ruler who has absolute power. Donald Trump expects absolute power.)
If a ruler has absolute power, you no longer have a say in what goes on. In that autocracy, votes don’t matter.
On January 6, Trump already tried to convince everyone that votes don’t matter—but he didn’t say that; he said the election was rigged and that he really won. Which is what he would say in the future after every election, just as all of the world’s autocrats do. (Remember, autocrat is another word for dictator.)
In a dictatorship, there is a boss. And no one gets to question The Boss. When you are in that situation with a boss you can’t vote in or out, it’s not fun anymore.
If you voted for Trump and would vote for him again, what is it specifically that you think he could do for you?
Trump delivered the Supreme Court to you on a gold-plated platter, a court who went against stare decisis and declared that the prior Supreme Courts did not follow the law and got it wrong with Roe v. Wade. Trump’s Supreme Court overturned a law that had been challenged at the Supreme Court level before (Roe) and refined to make it harder to get an abortion, but upheld. Trump’s Supreme Court overturned it. That’s what you’ve wanted for decades. You got it.
So what else do you want?
What else do you think Trump has to give you?
What’s going on in the states, especially with censorship and book banning, is not something the president has any control over. (Else, Joe Biden would have stopped it.)
Our country is a federalism, where some powers belong to the national government and other powers are reserved to the states. This is playing out right now in a way that really makes sense when you think about what the framers of the Constitution understood: not everyone wants the exact same laws.
Some states are more liberal. Some states are more conservative. As Americans, we have the legal choice to live in the state in which we would be most politically comfortable. Our Constitution was written so that Americans have freedom of choice. The nation can pass laws, but the nation can’t govern everything. Smaller groups of citizens (states) can pass their own laws on some matters. Right now, you can watch this brilliant system at work in the states.
Trump has nothing else to offer you through the national government in addition to what he has handed you. He was courting you. He wants your loyalty. He wants you to follow him and vote him in. But you know he’s hateful and spoiled and doesn’t like to follow rules. He’s going to try to override our Constitution again and stay in power just because he likes being The Boss.
If he becomes our president again, Trump will rock against our democracy with a renewed sense of pride—pride in Donald Trump, not pride in the United States of America. The only pride he will have in you is that he was able to get you to do what he wanted you to do.
And he will not let go next time, either, even though our Constitution specifies a two-term limit for all presidents.
I would vote for Nikki Hailey if you will just please nominate her. I don’t even know what her platform is. But I know she’s not on a quest to be The Boss of the United States.

Suzannah, I loved reading this column, not only because I agree with you; but because it explains so concisely the message that far too many people need to read or hear. “What is it that they like” about Trump? I am forwarding it to the few people that we know who are diehard Trumpets. Thank you. Always so pleasant to hear from you. XX JoAnn Carney

That would be a smart move. To try to vote for Nikki to keep Trump out of the nomination. Not sure if it succeeds, but it’s worth the try.
