Do you sometimes wonder if you even want power at work or in your relationships? Do you want it, but feel you don’t know how to get it? Do you worry that the whole idea of power is tainted, associating it with Machiavelli or bullies? Do you sometimes feel adrift, unsure or ashamed of what you want?
Come join us for a discussion of Unbound: A Woman’s Guide to Power by Kasia Urbaniak. Katie discovered it after hearing about it on the podcast Invisibilia, and Lisa agreed to read it as well. We’re both making our way through it, doing the exercises and thinking about how its lessons and language compare to our own experiences of the world. So far it’s very promising, with specific examples and guidelines as well as analysis that de-stigmatizes the act of seeking power.
And don’t worry if you don’t finish it beforehand, or read it but don’t do the exercises. We will still value your responses to the concepts, and your ideas on how to feel more empowered in your own lives. Already, we find ourselves nodding along to some insights, disagreeing with certain definitions and vocabulary choices, and seeing strategies familiar to us from other books. We don’t take a “love it or hate it” approach, but rather seek to learn, understand, and use what seems helpful.
